South Benchlands sale aimed at affordability

The Sitka assembly is moving ahead with the sale of about 20 acres of Benchlands property to a local developer -- but what is ultimately built on the land will depend on market forces, rather than on an affordable housing plan. The assembly agreed to proceed with drawing up an agreement with Sound Development, LLC, after a lengthy discussion about whether city hall should try include language requiring that the result be affordable.

Stanford: Prehistoric European cultures migrated by boat to America

Dennis Stanford has been the director of the Paleoindian/Paleoecology program at the National Museum of Natural History for 40 years. He's become a leading proponent of an idea that is making waves in Anthropology: that North America was populated by the migration of pre-Clovis cultures from Europe. Stanford is the keynote speaker 7:30 PM Sat Aug 17, at the Rasmuson Center, as part of the 2013 Paths Across the Pacific Conference.

As school closes this year, Tenakee focuses on next

The Tenakee School has been closed for this year, but residents of the Chichagof Island community hope to turn things around for the next. With only three local students enrolled, the Chatham School board voted last week (8-6-13) for closure -- but that closure is temporary for now. The district will maintain the building and other school assets for the next 9 months. Tenakee residents, meanwhile, will be looking for a solution.

‘Paths’ conference changes a student’s path

Michaela Dunlap is a former Sitka High student who now sits on the Paths Across the Pacific committee. She recalls how attending the Sitka conference put her on course to study Anthropology. Sitkan Bertha Karras says the conference validates her family's stories about how people first came to this part of Alaska.
