Sitka Cross Trail Marathon Classic route

This Saturday, August 3rd marks the inaugural Sitka Cross Trail Marathon. The race starts at 7:00 am and goes until 1:00 pm. Race organizers remind drivers to watch out for runners along the bridge, on Lincoln Street and on Halibut Point Road during the race.

How coastal Alaskans solve resource problems

Karen_HebertA team of researchers is working on a multi-year study in coastal communities from Bristol Bay to Sitka. But unlike their counterparts in the biological sciences, this university team is not studying fish, or marine mammals, or forest ecosystems. They’re studying us. Karen Hebert (pronounced “eh-BEAR”) is an anthropologist at Yale University. She’s examining the parallels between Bristol Bay and Southeast as they confront mining, fisheries, and timber issues.

REBOUND helps girls navigate social pressure — in kayaks

A new short film from Sitka’s domestic violence shelter explores prevention from an unexpected angle: camping and kayaking. REBOUND is the name of the film and the program, which completed its third season early this summer. Although it has included boys in the past, REBOUND this year brought together nine high-school age girls for an extended kayaking trip in Southeast Alaska.

Davidson leaves ‘full-court press’ at ADF&G

One of the top Fish & Game officials in Southeast is stepping down, after 23 years helping manage the area’s commercial fisheries. Bill Davidson is the regional management coordinator based in Sitka. His last day on the job is July 31. Davidson stopped by the studios of KCAW to talk about his life and times in the commercial fisheries division.

‘New-ish’ curator looks forward at Sitka Museum

Hayley Chambers has been on the job as curator the Sitka Historical Museum for a couple of months. She's interested in starting a volunteer program for locals. Interim director Chris Todd announces that the Society has won a prestigious award from the American Association for State and Local History for its exhibit on last year's ANB/ANS Centennial.
