Vocal Jazz students to perform ‘in the moment’

Jazz singer Dee Daniels taught a workshop for vocalists this week. Tonight (7PM, Rasmuson Center, free) her students will perform. With Native Jazz Quartet bassist Christian Fabian. Daniels says jazz promotes an authentic technique -- there is no room for auto-tuning or other technology in the jazz method.

Bes Young: The art of aging

Bessie Young is a Sitka Fellow originally from New Jersey, who’s been studying for her Master’s Degree in Ireland. She’s been documenting dementia in elderly women since her undergraduate years. “If you are comfortable with a difficult topic, that’s an area you should really pursue and help people deal with. I deal with it myself through my artwork,” she says. Young will use her seven weeks in Sitka to continue work on her Master’s project. She plans to spend time in Sitka’s senior care facilities, getting to know the residents.

Theater camp’s ‘Seussical’ to run Fri, Sat in Sitka

W.T. McRae selected Seussical the Musical for this year's Musical Theater camp. He directs the show, which opens this Friday night (7PM Fri Jul 26, 2PM & 7PM Sat Jul 27, Sitka Performing Arts Center, $20/$15 students and seniors). With Megan Wright, who stars as The Cat in the Hat.
