Two new records were set this weekend in Sitka’s Alpine Adventure Run. Emily de La Bruyere won for the women and set a record, with a time of one hour, 21 minutes and 15 seconds. Second place for women went to Tasha Folsom, at one hour, 23 minutes and 57 seconds.

Women writers explore the literature of resilience

Island Institute co-director Carolyn Servid and poet Laurie Kutchins share their plans for an event this week called "The Literature of Resilience," a roundtable discussion among nine women writers. They'll include the public in their conversation Friday evening, with readings, stories, and performance (7:30 PM Fri Jul 19, Del Shirley Hospitality Room of Allen Auditorium, $10 at the door).

A boom year for Redoubt sockeye

Redoubt Lake near Sitka is having a banner year for sockeye. The US Forest Service, which manages the weir at Redoubt, reports almost 22,000 fish have returned to freshwater so far, and the run is not expected to peak for another week or two. Biologists project that the total run this year could reach 80,000. Two commercial seine openings have been held, and more are likely.

Sitka All-Stars no-hit Petersburg, lose to Juneau rally

Five Sitka pitchers combined for a no-hitter on Monday, in the Major League Division of the District Two tournament in Wrangell. Aedon Dumag, Morgan Simic, JusOran McGraw, Gavin Flores, and Reese Greenough held Petersburg to no hits over six innings. Sitka won 13-0. A rally by Juneau Tuesday afternoon, however, ended Sitka's win streak. The 11-10 loss puts Sitka at 2-1 in the round robin tournament.
