A Sitka farewell

USGC Air Station Sitka pilot Brooks Crawford and his wife Caitlin say a very special Sitka Farewell, with Jess Gibson on KCAW's Good Day Radio show on Tuesday morning (7-16-13). Friendships formed in the Coast Guard have to endure long absences, as typical postings for career officers last only three years. Gibson asked the Crawfords to share their favorite music, and some of their experiences during their Sitka tour. The show was filmed by a camera crew from the television hit Coast Guard Alaska.

Smokey haze colors Sitka’s days

Sitka’s otherwise clear weather on Monday (7-15-13) was marred by smoke from forest fires in Canada. Joel Curtis is with the National Weather Service in Juneau. Once a day his office receives satellite imagery that can detect the heat of wildfires. “And I’m seeing about a dozen right now in the Yukon Territory,” he says. The smoke created a pinkish hue as it filtered sunlight in Sitka in the early afternoon.

Grasmeder to leave top SEARHC hospital post

Marty_Grasmeder_feaThe head of Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital in Sitka is resigning. Dr. Marty Grasmeder has been both hospital administrator at SEARHC in Sitka, and the facility’s medical director for the last several years. Grasmeder has accepted a position as the Medical Director of the Multnomah County Health Department in Portland, Oregon.

Salmon dip

Sitkan Tom Wallo dipnets at Redoubt Falls over the weekend. Wallo and his partners netted 11 sockeye salmon on Saturday during a day of subsistence fishing. The bag limit was increased this year to 25 fish per day. The Department of Fish and Game plans to hold a rare commercial opening for Redoubt Sockeye later this month.
