Invasive alert! Alder-eating sawfly discovered in Sitka

An invasive insect that is doing widespread damage to alder trees in Southcentral Alaska has now been discovered in Southeast. A Forest Service entomologist is fairly certain that the bright green caterpillar which recently defoliated a small tree in a Sitka neighborhood is the green alder sawfly, which is native to North Africa.

The high school session of the Sitka Fine Arts Camp culminates this weekend with final performances in the visual and performing arts. An oral history study of the former Sheldon Jackson School in Sitka is showing that many students thrived in the institution’s strict, missionary environment. This is in contrast to widely-held views that missionary schools served only to break Alaska Native traditions, culture, and language.

Handmade fishing memoirs are ‘adventure-bound’

An iconic Sitka figure is returning to town this summer -- in book form. Author Lorrie Haight has collected the poetry of her late husband and longtime Sitka fisherman Harrison “Smitty” Smith in a volume called “The Fishing Poet.” Haight has also published her own memoir: “First Time North: A Young Woman’s True Alaskan Adventure.”
