‘Bicycle Month’ activities planned in Sitka

Bicycle activist and health educator Doug Osborne describes some of the events planned for Sitka during National Bicycle Month in Sitka, including the Bike Rodeo (Sat May 4 at the USCG hangar), Bike to School Day (Wed May 8), Bike to Work Week (May 13-17), Bike to Work Day Pancake Breakfast (Fri May 17, 7:30-9 at UAS).

Sitka flights reduced during runway repair

Sitka will miss two Alaska Airlines flights a day during the month of May, in order to allow a paving contractor to replace the runway at the Rocky Gutierrez Airport. Flight 70, which arrives from Juneau at around 11 PM every night, and Flight 73, which departs at 6 AM the next morning with the same plane, have been suspended as of this week.

Mt. Edgecumbe’s Kanuk brings home NYO gold

A Mt. Edgecumbe High School student brought home gold from the Native Youth Olympics in Anchorage over the weekend (Apr 26-27, 2013). Nelson Kanuk, a senior from Kipnuk, took first place in the boys Seal Hop. Kanuk covered nearly 135-feet in the agonizing event.

Sitka girl, 15, shaves head for childhood cancer research

Over the past decade, St. Baldrick’s Day has become a major fundraising event for pediatric cancer research. It all began in 1999 when a group of insurance executives in Manhattan shaved their heads in solidarity with young cancer patients. The majority of participants in the event are males, but a few daring women join them. And in Sitka last Friday, a teenage girl decided to take the plunge, raising nearly $3,000 in the process.
