Sitka herring harvest down in third opener

Herring seining opened for the third time Saturday afternoon in Sitka Sound. The Alaska Department of Fish & Game called the opener at 4:10 PM. There’s no official word yet on the afternoon’s haul. Informal reports on social media suggest fishing was slower than the previous two openers – perhaps around 1,000 tons.

Second herring opener at 2 PM today

The Alaska Department of Fish & Game has scheduled the second Sitka Sound Sac Roe herring opening of the season this afternoon (Thu 3-28-13) at 2 p.m. The fishery will take place in the waters north of Crow and Middle Islands.

Herring fishery opens!

Today at 3 p.m. was the first opening of Sitka's lucrative commercial herring fishery. About 48 boats were on the water fishing until it came to an end for the day a few minutes after 6 p.m. The fishery area was between Bieli Rock and Makhnati Island.
