Sitka Reads project encourages Sitkans to read book about ‘racial healing’ this fall

Instead of reading a book by a local author, individuals and groups participating in Sitka Reads will read a 10-chapter book entitled "The Racial Healing Handbook: Practical Activities to Help You Challenge Privilege, Confront Systemic Racism and Engage in Collective Healing."

New coronavirus case reported in Angoon

Angoon’s Mayor Joshua Bowen announced the new case on Wednesday (10-14-20) and said that contact tracing is underway. Free testing for Angoon residents is available Wednesday (10-14-20) and Thursday at the Jessie Norma Jean Health Clinic from 2 to 4 p.m.

The Sheldon Jackson Museum’s Native Artist Residency Program goes virtual

The Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum has sponsored the Alaska Native Artist Residency Program for over 30 years. Operating during the pandemic hasn't been easy, but they've adapted by going virtual to bring artist-in-residents to the community for talks and workshops. Tlingit artist Pamela Johnson began her residency on Oct. 1 and will spend the time working in the museum's gallery, teaching an eight-part regalia making class over Zoom and giving an artist talk.

Tenakee Springs announces first known case of the coronavirus

The Chichagof Island community of Tenakee Springs has reported its first known case of the coronavirus. Mayor Dan Kennedy announced the new case on Tuesday. He identified the individual as a Tenakee Springs resident and said that state health officials have started the contact tracing process.
