Another Sitkan tests positive for the coronavirus

Sitka Unified Command announced another resident case of the coronavirus on Friday (9-11-20). The man is in his twenties and did not have symptoms at the time of testing on Sept. 3, according to a city press release.

Angoon extends emergency travel order until further notice

Angoon has extended its emergency travel order until further notice, in an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19 in the small, remote community. Angoon’s mayor originally issued the order two weeks ago, following the first confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the community and believes it’s important to keep it in place.

Sitka Counseling celebrates substance abuse recovery this month with a variety of events

September is recovery month--a time to talk about substance abuse recovery, mental health issues and suicide awareness. And right now, with the increased isolation and stress associated with the pandemic, mental health awareness is perhaps more important than ever. In partnership with SEARHC and other organizations, Sitka Counseling is hosting events throughout September, including a podcast spotlighting recovery and a walk on Sept. 26.

Man arrested following theft at Wells Fargo

A customer at Sitka’s Wells Fargo was robbed Wednesday (9-9-20) morning. The Sitka Police Department received a call at 8:42 A.M. from a bank employee that someone had stolen $220 out of a customer’s hand while he was standing at the ATM in the Wells Fargo lobby.

After 10 days with no cases, Sitka reports new coronavirus case

Another Sitka resident has tested positive for the coronavirus, after 10 days without a reported case in the community.

The person received a positive COVID-19 test result Monday (Sept. 7), according to state data. The source of the infection remains under investigation.

Creators of landslide warning system seek input from Sitkans

A number of organizations--including the Sitka Sound Science Center and the RAND Corporation--have been working on a landslide warning system for Sitka. They recently received funding to create a dashboard for Sitkans to access all kinds of data and are asking residents to fill out a survey to help determine the best way to disseminate information during periods of high landslide risk.

Yakutat School District opens to in-person classes

Around 100 students in the Yakutat School District went back to school Tuesday (Sept. 8). After a cluster of cases in late July, the community now has no active cases of the coronavirus. Students will attend classes in-person four days a week, unless they opt for virtual schooling. KCAW’s Erin McKinstry spoke with Yakutat School District’s new superintendent Patricia Hutcherson about the district’s Smart Start plan for the upcoming school year.
