Newspaper editorial prompts delay in assembly appointment

The Sitka assembly has delayed the appointment of a new member, after a newspaper editorial pointed out a possible procedural error. Thad Poulson, the editor and publisher of the Daily Sitka Sentinel, published an editorial Monday night citing the Sitka charter, which states that “A vacancy shall be filled by the Assembly which shall elect a qualified person within 20 days after the vacancy occurs.”

Record climber finds humanity on world’s oceans, peaks

An author who holds a combined record for mountain climbing and surfing says he’s found more meaning in teaching and family, than in adventure. Francis Slakey is a professor of Physics at Georgetown. His new book, To the Last Breath, describes the challenges of becoming the first person to summit the highest peak on every continent, and to surf every ocean. But the story is also a memoir of how Slakey overcame his deep, personal isolation and learned to make meaningful connections with the people in his life.

Reports of bear mauling just a rumor

There was a rumor swirling around Sitka last week that someone had been mauled by a bear. But according to Phil Mooney, the area wildlife biologist with the Department of Fish and Game, it was a false alarm.

Running (and wheeling) fools head to start line on Saturday

Phyllis Hackett, Sitka program director for SAIL, and ORCA coordinator Patrick McMahon outline this Saturday's (6-30-12) "Only Fools Run at Midnight" event. The costume party/race starts at 11:59 PM from the Sitka Firehall. Advance registration ($20 individuals, $10 youth, $50 families) is available at First Bank or Old Harbor Books. Same-day registration is $5 additional, beginning at 10:30 PM. Costume judging at 11 PM.
