Forest Service, conservation groups bet on river restoration

Over thirty years ago, the Sitkoh River watershed on Chichagof Island was logged, damaging the local salmon habitat. Now, the US Forest Service is partnering with environmental groups to restore the river -- and they say the project is a perfect example of broader changes taking place on the Tongass.

Like a curtain opening, the clouds lifted and a longish stretch of dreary weather ended just as Sitka Summer Music Festival musicians tuned up for a noontime concert in Sitka National Historical Park on Wednesday (6-20-12). “Rhino” study explores biological success under pressure

A two-year project is underway in Sitka Sound this summer to study the rhinoceros auklet. Unlike much of the biological research in the state, the work on this particular seabird is not about unraveling the mystery of its decline. The “rhino,” as scientists call it for short, is actually thriving, and a graduate student at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is going to spend most of her waking hours over the next two summers trying to learn why.

Lake Street crash makes a scene

According to police, a truck driven by 30-year-old Sitka resident Jesse Blumer swerved out of control around 7:20pm Saturday (6-16-12) and slid onto the front lawn. The truck moved with such force that it lost two tires, said Sitka Police Lieutenant Barry Allen.

Matt Hunter applies for assembly appointment

Another candidate has submitted a letter of interest to fill an upcoming assembly vacancy. Matt Hunter, a lifelong Sitka resident who teaches Math at Mt. Edgecumbe High School, turned in his application to the municipal clerk’s office this morning (Mon 6-18-12). The 29-year-old Hunter joins former assembly members Jack Ozment and Bill Paden, and former assembly candidate Michelle Putz, in seeking the seat being vacated by Terry Blake.
