Troller charged with reckless endangerment

The skipper of a salmon troller that ran aground two weeks ago is facing a single misdemeanor charge of reckless endangerment in Sitka court. Charges of boating under the influence are pending in a separate investigation with the Coast Guard. William Walder put the 42-foot Yankee on the rocks near Error Island in Sitka’s Eastern Channel on June 6.

The Coast Guard cutter Maple got a new commander at a ceremony Thursday. Lieutenant Commander Fred Seaton took over from Lieutenant Commander Daniel Gray. Gray had served as captain of the cutter for three years.

Quartets bring new depth to Sitka’s chamber concert series

The Sitka Summer Music Festival is bringing two quartets to perform this season. Artistic Director Zuill Bailey says it's a chance for experienced players to interact with Sitka's environment, without the relentless rehearsal schedule. “High tunnels” sprout in Sitka, thanks to USDA program

When you think of food in Southeast Alaska you might think of king salmon or moose -- farming is not really our forte. But some Alaskans are trying to change that -- at least on a small scale. Here in Sitka, you can find two large, transparent plastic tunnels rising from a front yard on Peterson Street. These are "high tunnels," for growing produce. And they were funded by a USDA program that hopes to see similar stuctures sprout throughout the US.
