KCAW intern sizes up Sitka, local bears

With a week of training under her belt, KCAW's graduate news intern Rachel Waldholz is air-ready. Waldholz (who, by the way, pronounces her last name with a "t" sound at the end, "Wald-holts") just completed her first year at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism. Before J-school, Waldholz worked at the High Country News on the Western Slope of Colorado, and at the Tremont Tribune in the Bronx.

On Thursday (6-7-12), the Sheet'ka Kwaán Naa Kahídi echoed with the footsteps of fifteen newly minted graduates of the Department of Public Safety's Training Academy, who marched in singing, "This life was made for me." Besides their certificates, Alaska's newest public safety officers received their badges.

Another troller grounds in Sitka Sound, skipper charged

A Sitka fisherman is facing charges of reckless endangerment after running his boat aground in Sitka’s Eastern Channel Wednesday evening (6-6-12). 52-year-old William A. Walder was arrested by Sitka police officers at the scene after refusing to comply with rescue personnel to leave his troller “Yankee,” as the boat listed on the rocks near Error Island. He was also charged with boating under the influence.
