Gov. Parnell: On creating economic opportunity

Gov. Sean Parnell says he’d rather give communities like Sitka a fishing pole than a “bunch of fish.” The governor’s twist on the old adage came during his remarks to the Sitka Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday (6-6-12). The Sitka audience was interested in everything from melting permafrost, to the in-state gasline, ferries, the EPA, and student loans. The governor appeared well-versed in all these issues, and may have found talking about them a relief from the issue that has polarized Juneau since January: Oil tax reform.

Knock-out punch

While a slow-moving ship makes for slow-motion crash, the Matanuska's collision with the Ocean Beauty plant in Petersburg on May 7 was enough to knock out processing operations for the summer. Tom Sunderland, vice-president of marketing for Ocean Beauty, told KFSK News recently that the plant will still offer support services for the salmon fishing fleet this summer. This video was shared on YouTube by a passenger on the ferry who witnessed the crash.

Lady Wolves softball wins third-straight state title

Someone’s going to have to go up on a tall ladder in the Sitka High gym – again. The Sitka Lady Wolves softball team won their third-straight small schools state title last weekend – their fourth in eight years – which means it’s time for another banner to hang from the gym’s rafters.

Curators experience culture in Sitka

Sarah Owens is a Fellow in textile conservation, Peter McElhenney is a Fellow in objects conservation, and Rebecca Summerour is a graduate intern in textile conservation -- all with the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington DC. The trio are participating in the Conservator Field Research Project, which offers museum professionals a chance to learn about Native culture in context. Their host in Sitka is renowned Sitka textile artist Teri Rofkar.
