The Sitka assembly this week (Tue 5-22-12) unanimously approved asking the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council to lower the cap on trawl bycatch when it meets in Kodiak in June.

Sealaska executive vice-president Rick Harris told the Sitka assembly on Tuesday (5-22-12) that the controversial legislation remains in the US Senate’s Energy and Natural Resources subcommittee on Public Lands and Forests, where it’s been for exactly one year. The assembly also heard an update on Sealaska's selection of Redoubt Falls.

The event was founded by Bill and Carol Hughes in memory of their daughter, Julie, who died of leukemia while still a student. Julie's swim coach, Suha Tokman, was instrumental in organizing those early events. Now back in Sitka, Tokman helped Bill and Carol start this year's race.
