Letter from the book bus

Sitkans joined tens of thousands of others around the world on Monday (4-23-12) distributing free books for World Book Night. The event began in the UK last year, and coincides with UNESCO's World Book Day (which commemorates the death of Cervantes and the birth of Shakespeare). This year, the American College of Sports Medicine is casting a wide net to prevent injuries by highlighting the role of the trainer. The job is about a lot more than rushing in with a roll of tape and scissors when a player is down on the field. Trainers may be the difference between a quick recovery and unnecessarily prolonged injury for young athletes.

Economic forum to reinvigorate past ideas

A community economic forum held in Sitka last week generated many new ideas for improving the local economy, but in the end participants decided to try and jumpstart some old ones. Participants voted to pursue affordable housing strategies on the benchlands, to develop a deepwater cruise dock downtown, and to develop a comprehensive marketing plan for independent tourism.

State high court rules in favor of 2008 Sitka citizen initiative

The Alaska Supreme Court ruled today (Friday 4-20-12) that a controversial 2008 citizens’ initiative in Sitka was legal, and should have gone before voters. The proposed initiative was seen by many as way to control further development at Sitka’s former pulp mill site -- including a possible cruise ship dock. But the litigation doesn’t mention ships at all. The underlying issues may be much larger.
