Chamber, SEDA forums examine economy, explore ideas

In what’s become a ritual of spring, members of the business community in Sitka will be gathering on two occasions this month to examine the local economy. In the first, the Sitka Chamber of Commerce will hold an economic summit on Wednesday afternoon, April 11, to hear presentations from a panel of Sitka’s major industries. In the second, on Tuesday April 17, the Sitka Economic Development Association will host a public forum to develop ideas to improve Sitka’s economy.

Three Baranof Barracuda swimmers made waves March 30-31 at Northwest Age Group Sectionals in Federal Way, WA. Skylar Moore, Jessica Davis and Moses Alley represented Sitka.Northwest Age Groups is the highest level of swimming for age group swimmers in the western zone, and with almost 1300 swimmers competing.

Herring hunt nets 3,700 tons on Saturday

Herring seiners in Sitka landed about 3,700 tons on Saturday (4-7-12) in the third opener of this year’s Sac Roe fishery. That puts the fleet at 14,000 tons so far, well below its goal of a record 29,000 tons. ADF&G has mapped nearly 37-miles of active spawn over the past week. Biologists opened a huge area in Salisbury and Krestof sounds to allow seiners to hunt for unspawned fish.
