Bishop’s House suspect injured during vandalism

Sitka police and National Park rangers are looking for a man suspected of vandalizing the Russian Bishop’s House. Chief Ranger Chad Corey says a passing driver – two Saturdays ago (3-24-12) – reportedly saw a man breaking windows in the historic structure at around 9 in the evening. The suspect used only his hands to do the damage, and blood was found on the scene.

This I Believe: Stitches of Confidence

Lucy Poulson believes in the power of knitting in "Stitches of Confidence."Students in Rebecca Himschoot's fifth-grade class wrote "This I Believe" essays over the winter. The assignment was based on NPR's well-known series of the same name by producer Jay Allison.

The Japanese fishing vessel Ryou-Un Maru lists after being riddled by 25mm explosive rounds fired by the USCG Cutter Anacapa Thursday afternoon (4-5-12). The Anacapa also conducted a fire drill on the burning vessel, before sinking it in 6,000 feet of water.

Herring seiners are not the only fishermen commuting long-distance to Sitka this spring. A half-ton Steller sea lion has been seen in and around Sitka’s harbors over the last few days browsing on the abundant herring. The animal, which has an innovative cell-phone tracking device, was tagged – just over a month ago – at the Bonneville Dam near Portland, Oregon, about 900 miles to the south.

“Moon Over Buffalo” opens Friday with comedy, swords

Sitka Community Theater producer Shannon Haugland discusses this year's performance of Ken Ludwig's "Moon Over Buffalo," which opens 7 PM Friday April 6 at the Sitka Performing Arts Center, and plays again at 7 PM on Saturday and Sunday (tickets $10/$7 at Old Harbor Books).
