The color-coding scheme was the brainchild (or lovechild?) of Jake Schumacher, Raven Radio's Music and Operations Director from before sign-on in 1981 to 1985, and Program Director until 1994.

The second Sitka Sound sac roe herring opening will be at 11:30 this morning in the same area as the first opening, in the northwest portion of Sitka Sound including Hayward Strait, Promisla Bay, and parts of Eastern Bay.

Support group to address grief at any stage

Beverly Rivard is a grief counselor and social worker at the Bill Brady Healing Center. She and Willow Moore, director of Braveheart Volunteers, discuss a grief support group which will begin on Mon Apr 16 at 6 PM in the Pioneer Home Manager's House. Rivard says grief does not necessarily begin at the loss of a loved-one, and may manifest itself in various ways throughout your life.

In safe hands

Members of the Alaska Department of Public Safety released eagles at the Alaska Raptor Center in Sitka on Saturday (3-31-12) in honor of the governor's "Choose Respect" initiative. An audience of around 100 gathered on the center's boardwalk trail to watch the four birds return to the wild.

Teacher hoopapalooza

Sitka High and Mt. Edgecumbe faculty basketball teams outlived the clock Friday night (3-30-12) in a benefit game at the BJ McGillis gym. Students from the two schools have partnered in an effort to raise $60,000 for a girls' school in Afghanistan. Mt. Edgecumbe student Annaliese Moll said she didn't know how much this event raised, "but the cash box is overflowing!"

Scholar examines Ricketts, Calvin connection

Dr. Katie Rodger is a lecturer at UC Davis, and a student of the life of marine biologist Ed Ricketts, who is known to the literary world as "Doc" in John Steinbeck's "Cannery Row." It was Ricketts' collaboration with Sitka writer Jack Calvin, however, that produced one of the most seminal texts on marine ecology ever written, "Between Pacific Tides." Rodger will speak tonight (Fri Mar 30) at UAS Sitka.

Opinion: Blame misplaced for crash of CG-6017

I must question why the Coast Guard will use all its considerable skill to castigate the crew of CG-6017 and single out the co-pilot, LT Leone, for blame. Maybe the answer can be provided by the Commandant, Admiral Robert Papp, who so desperately wants ‘accountability.’ Perhaps the answer can be provided by Admiral Ostebo who wants to give Admiral Papp what he wants – an aviator held accountable.
