Pelican officials hope their takeover of a closed seafood plant will help invigorate the town’s economy. But they’ve got a long way to go before that happens.Pelican Mayor Patricia Phillips says the seafood plant owed the city about $40,000 in back taxes. School issues win major voter support

Tuesday’s election demonstrated that Sitkans are big on their schools, especially when that support translates into major state funding. Three out of four voters approved a pair of bond measures to pay for major maintenance at Blatchley Middle School. The margin was nearly as large for using the summer sales tax hike to pay for major maintenance at Pacific High.

Tour season better than some expected

Alaska’s 2010 tourism season is over. Excursion managers and cruise line officials are still crunching the numbers. But it looks like the drop in cruise ship traffic was at least partially made up by an increase in independent travelers.
