Herring harvest limit to be lower than forecast

Sitka’s spring herring fishery will be about 1,000 tons less than originally estimated, the Department of Fish & Game announced today. The harvest level for the herring fishery in Sitka Sound will be just over 16,000 tons. That’s about 7 percent lower than the preliminary harvest amount announced in December.

Participants in Sitka's sixth annual Wearable Arts show flaunted their homemade haute couture before a sold-out crowd at Harrigan Centennial Hall on Saturday night. Local artists made outfits out of plastic bags, old jeans, and rubber tubing -- plus one set of chain-mail armor constructed from more than 4,000 soda can pull-tabs. Quilt auction Tuesday to raise money for scholarships

Jan Lovett and Annette Blankenship of Ocean Wave Quilters' Guild preview their 16th annual scholarship auction. The guild will give two scholarships this year to graduating seniors from Sitka High School and Mount Edgecumbe High School, and will also donate money to the Sitka Fine Arts Camp scholarship fund.

Cost overruns add up to a bigger bill for Blue Lake

Sitka’s Blue Lake Dam hydro expansion project will cost about $3.6-million more than expected. The total project -- not including new backup diesel generators -- was originally estimated to cost about $142-million. It is now up to about $145-million, Utility Director Chris Brewton told the Sitka assembly Tuesday night. Brewton later told KCAW that this is the only major cost overrun the project has seen so far.

Steve Ramp, of the U.S. Coast Guard, discusses the free dockside exam program for commercial fishing vessels. The voluntary program gives fishermen a "second set of eyes" to look over their equipment and verify it meets federal requirements.
