Hatcheries are helping Japan’s herring industry rebound. What does that mean for Alaska?

Alaska’s lucrative herring fisheries were born in the 1950s, when Japan’s domestic herring industry all but died out. But Japanese herring are making a comeback now, thanks to a government-sponsored hatchery program that has rebuilt stocks, and most importantly, changed attitudes about hatchery-produced herring in a country that prizes its seafood above just about everything else. Sitka needs more tourism data- that’s one of the conclusions the tourism task force reached as it tried to develop next steps for the city’s response to a boom in cruise tourism. When the Sitka Assembly meets tonight, it will consider how to plan a new research initiative focused on collecting data on the impacts of the visitor industry, honing in on three areas: community, economy, and environment.
