City to take over management of Blatchley Middle School pool

The City of Sitka will take over management of the Blatchley Middle School swimming pool from the Sitka School District. At a special budget meeting on Thursday (4-4-24) the Sitka Assembly unanimously agreed to assume pool operations at a time when the school district is struggling to contend with uncertainties surrounding state funding.

Fine Arts Camp requests $125,000 from city to break even on PAC management

As conversations around school funding continue, one facility that has been mostly spared from budget talks in recent years is the Sitka Performing Arts Center. For the last several years, a local nonprofit has been managing the PAC for the Sitka School District. They don’t charge a fee- they just collect revenue from rentals of the PAC. But now they’re asking for an annual fee in order to keep up with the cost of running the facility.

Buyers vie for hatchery herring in Otaru’s ‘flash’ auction

KCAW’s Katherine Rose continues her assignment in Japan this week, where she’s looking into the industry and culture of herring. Today, Rose tracks the herring to an early-morning wholesale auction in the city of Otaru, where, in a lightning-fast process that lasts under four minutes, buyers stake their claim to thousands of boxes of hatchery-produced herring – all of which will be processed and retailed in Japan.
