Sheldon Jackson to give core campus to arts camp

It’s official: The core campus of the former Sheldon Jackson College is being transferred to the Sitka Fine Arts Camp. The arts camp, which runs programs for 500 students every summer, will take ownership of the central campus on Feb. 1. A ceremonial transfer will happen when the trustees hold their final meeting on campus March 12.

SEDA: Sitka's assets outweigh cons for business growth

The sky is not falling at the Sitka Economic Development Association. SEDA executive director Garry White delivered an upbeat, forward-looking message to the Sitka Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday (12-8-10). Although he pointed to some areas of concern, including the high cost of living and low demographics among young families, White’s list of positives for business development was fairly extensive.

Bob DeArmond (1911-2010) created "window into past"

Robert N. DeArmond is being remembered this week as among the foremost of Alaska’s historians, but DeArmond himself might not have seen it that way. DeArmond died last Friday (11-26-10) in the Sitka Pioneer’s Home, where he had resided for the last nineteen years. Friends say the 99-year-old DeArmond was averse to the label “historian,” and instead saw himself simply as a researcher of past events, with no desire to argue for a particular point of view. Whatever the case, DeArmond had a lifelong passion for detail that was likely unequaled in Alaska.

Mayoral candidates focus on differences

Candidate for mayor Cheryl Westover says she’d consider a hiring freeze to help balance the city budget next year. Her opponent, John Stein, says the assembly should explore ways to privatize some services, and transfer others to the state. The two candidates drew out their differences in a forum hosted by the Sitka Chamber of Commerce this afternoon (Wed 9-29-10).
