For four days this February (Feb. 16 - Feb. 19, 2015), six students from Blatchley Middle School ventured off campus to learn the craft of radio at the KCAW studios. Yesterday (3-3-15), The Blatchley Variety Show aired in tandem with the Mt. Edgecumbe Radio Club. This 20-minute radio program featured a medley of songs, skits, and student produced news. Sitka 7th-grader triumphant at state Spelling Bee

A Sitka seventh-grader has won the state spelling bee. Abigail Fitzgibbon was the Sitka champion last year as a sixth-grader, but was unseated earlier this year in a dazzling spell-off with eighth-grader Kyle Vidad. Fitzgibbon represented Sitka last weekend in Anchorage as a runner up, but nevertheless managed to run away with the state trophy. Read More

In what was one of the most tightly-contested spelling bees in recent memory, 27 grade-level finalists at Blatchley Middle School in Sitka spelled their way to word no. 208 on the official Scripps National Spelling Bee list Wednesday night (1-15-14). In the end it boiled down to eighth-grader Kyle Vidad and defending champion Abigail Fitzgibbon. The two went head-to-head for eight rounds, until Fitzgibbon tripped on "matriculation" and Vidad successfully spelled "smithereens" to win the round, and then "aerodynamic" to win the championship.
