Southeast trollers landed 85,000 kings during the summer's first opening, July 1-12. Only 500 boats fished during the opener, the lowest on record. Managers think a number of factors -- including a lengthy court battle -- may have chilled effort.
A resolution in support of the Southeast Alaska Troll Fishery cleared its first legislative hurdle on February 14. Co-sponsor Rep. Rebecca Himschoot told members, "this incredible homegrown fleet of fishermen is under attack."
