GCI turned on five new cell towers in Sitka just before New Years, at least a full week ahead of schedule. The Alaska-based telecommunications company struck a deal with the Sitka Electric Department, which invested $300,000 installing the 60-foot towers -- but only GCI customers will benefit initially.

Telecommunication services to Sitka and Angoon were disrupted early Thursday morning (7-13-17) when the fiber optic cable serving those communities was damaged. Service should be restored within 24 hours.
Representatives from United Way spoke at the Chamber of Commerce meeting in Sitka on Wednesday (10-12-16). The national organization supports nonprofits across the country, by partnering with local businesses to give money and volunteers.
