Air Station Sitka flies without pay during government shutdown

Coast Guard personnel in Sitka are reporting for duty as usual during the government shutdown -- and hoping they’ll draw paychecks next week (January 15). Commander Michael Frawley says the 120 uniformed personnel at Air Station Sitka are working without the certainty pay while the President and Congress remain at odds over funding for a border wall with Mexico. Gov’t shutdown puts Forest Service staff, National Park visitors in a pinch

Many Sitkans returned to work the day after Christmas, except for civilian federal employees, who remain on indefinite furlough following last weekend’s government shutdown. The US Forest Service and National Park Service will both be largely unstaffed during the shutdown. The Post Office and uniformed members of the Coast Guard will function as usual. Read More
