This weekend’s Jazz on the Waterfront will feature a 20-piece big band and local and visiting performers. The event, which includes dinner and dessert, is a fundraiser for Sitka Fine Arts Camp. Sitka Fine Arts Camp director Roger Schmidt explains the thinking behind the theme for this year’s Jazz on the Waterfront: “The Music of Spies and other Dangerous Agents.” The band will feature 18 players and 4 vocalists, performing music from the James Bond films and other cinematic and television icons. 7 p.m. Saturday, June 24, Odess Theater. Sitka Fine Arts Camp director shares details of this Saturday’s “Jazz on the Waterfront,” and evening of music and gourmet dining to support the scholarship program at the camp (7 p.m. June 25, 2022, Odess Theater, doors open at 6:30, tickets $75 online). Kyle Athade will lead a 20-member jazz orchestra playing selections from the French Hot Club era, Basie, a Latin music set, and R&B. The menu, from Chef Patti Peck, includes tapenade toast points, grilled romaine with a lemon vinaigrette, boeuf bourguignon (with a vegetarian option), and a lemon mousse and raspberry coulis.

Ed Littlefield and Roger Schmidt join KCAW’s Rich McClear in the studio. Littlefield and Schmidt are local musicians playing in this Saturday’s Jazz on the Waterfront event from the Sitka Fine Arts Camp.

The annual fundraising event raises money for the camp’s scholarship program. This year, the event features a 20-piece band playing Duke Ellington hits — and more.

The Sitka Fine Arts Camp is in full swing! Executive Director, Roger Schmidt, and staff member, Ed Littlefield, talk about the camp’s upcoming performances by Middle School campers, as well as this weekend’s Jazz on the Waterfront.

With Middle School camp coming to a close, 240+ campers will be delivering their final performances every night from Wednesday to Friday at the Sitka Performing Arts Center. The campers will be showcasing everything they learned during their stay, which will include physical theater, dance and visual arts.

“It’s really some of the most driven, exciting and talented youth of Alaska and also all over the country too. It’s really fun to watch them get ready,” Roger Schmidt said.

Following the performances, Jazz on the Waterfront will take place Saturday, July 1, in the Odess Theater at 7 pm. Guests will enjoy dinner and live musical entertainment by the Sitka Fine Arts Camp Big Band. Tickets are $65 at Old Harbor Books or by calling 747-3085.

Roger Schmidt, Director of the Sitka Fine Arts Camp, previews the summer ahead! He talks about what camp goers, from elementary to high school, can expect during their stay.

Schmidt also touches on the production of the Little Mermaid, Jazz and Dance intensives, Jazz on the Waterfront, and the Sitka Arts and Science Festival.

“We have a long summer this year,” he said. “Every summer we extend more and more weeks and serve more and more people.”
