Sitka Fellow and writer Julia Drake is the Morning Interview guest. She will be teaching a workshop in creative writing this Saturday at the Sitka Sound Science Center to pass on some of the tricks of her trade.
A week-long Tlingit immersion project wrapped up earlier this month in Sitka (08-07-15). About 60 attendees ranging in age from 5 to 50 packed Mt. Edgecumbe High School's Heritage Hall to learn and play in Tlingit. One activity was a Tlingit spelling bee. KCAW's Sarah Gibson met the program organizer, Heather Powell, and sent this audio postcard.
Nate Barnett is a composer, singer, and music director from Rochester, NY. He is one of six Sitka Fellows in residency at the Island Institute this summer. While in Sitka, Nate is composing a cantata for choir and chamber music inspired by spiritual, non-religious texts. He seeks to create new worship music accessible to all, that brings people together in song regardless of religion or race.
