Sitka Jazz Fest is coming to town February 7-9!

Mike Kernin joined KCAW’s Erin Fulton in the studio to discuss the festival, featuring a three-hour swing dance party at Harrigan Centennial Hall, student workshops, and multiple concerts featuring artists from all over the state and country.

This past weekend (Feb. 5, 2015 – Feb. 7, 2015 ), the sounds of brass instruments and scat vocals filled the hallways and concert venues of Sitka.

In its 20th year, the annual festival is an opportunity to feature guest musicians from around the world in evening performances, while filling the afternoons with jazz workshops for students around the state. According to Director Mike Kernin, guest musicians hailed from New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, San Francisco, South Africa, and throughout Alaska to share their jazz talents.

Violinist Mads Tolling is in town for the Sitka Jazz Fest, which runs February 5 – 7th and features concerts with guest musicians and local jazz groups alike. Tolling grew up in Denmark and discovered jazz as a teenager. His rose to prominence with the adventurous Turtle Island String Quartet, which won two Grammy awards for Best Classical Crossover Album.

Tolling will be performing Friday at 7:30pm at the Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $25. Available at Whites Pharmacy, Old Harbor Books, from Sitka music students, and at the door. For more information, visit http://www.sitkajazzfestival.com/

Sarah Martinson, the new music director at Sitka High School, talks about the upcoming Sitka Jazz Fest hosted by the school’s vocal jazz group. She was joined by singers Jack Petersen, Mitchell Edwards, Hailey Bernhoft, Walter Palof, and Debbie Yearwood. The Sitka Jazz Fest will also feature performances school ensembles from around Southeast and guest musicians, including  violinist Mads Tolling, Kenny Washington, and South African trumpeter Darren English.

Sitka Jazz Fest is an annual weekend dedicated to jazz music. Performances are Friday and Saturday, 4:30pm and 7:30pm at the Performing Arts Center. Tickets available at Harry Race. For more information visit http://www.sitkajazzfestival.com/
