A biannual community dance event is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Sitkans Can Dance is a community showcase, where locals can get on stage and share their talent with others. All dance genres are welcome. Melinda McAdams, Kristina Rear, and Eva Miller joined KCAW’s Andrew Hames to encourage would-be performers to start preparing for the November event. Melinda McAdams is with the Fireweed Dance Guild, which produces “Sitkans Can Dance” on alternate years when there is no performance of “The Nutcracker.” Sitkans Can Dance is returning this winter, after a pause in 2020. While many participants study with McAdams at the Sitka Studio of Dance, it’s not a requirement for SCD. McAdams is looking for soloists, duets, and small dance groups in all genres. There’s no fee to participate, however all dancers must be 12 years old and up. She’s also willing to support acts with costumes, rehearsal space, and performance feedback. “Sitkans Can Dance” will be staged on November 5, 2022. Sitkans can dance! Want proof? Sitka Studio Dance hosts an evening of solos, duets, and small group performances by locals across genres on November 10th, 7 p.m. at the Sitka Performing Arts Center. Director Melinda McAdams and dancer Allison Winger talk about the program, which began in 2014 and takes place every other year. Unlike the American reality television show, “So You Think You Can Dance,” the event allows participants to decide whether or not they want to be judged.

To participate, dancers must be 13 years and older. All genres of dance welcome. Costuming and choreography help is available. The deadline to sign-up is September 1st. Call Melinda McAdams 966-2557 with questions or to register.

The upcoming event Sitkans Can Dance is intended to expose the community to a wide variety of dance styles through both solo and couples dancing.

Sitkans Can Dance is sponsored by the Greater Sitka Arts Council and the Sitka Studio of Dance and will take place this Saturday, Oct 22 7pm at the Sitka Performing Arts Center.

Jeff Budd of the Greater Sitka Arts Council (GSAC) joined teen dancers Kaya Duguay and Naquoia Bautista to talk about Sitkans Can Dance, a joint fundraiser for GSAC and the Sitka Studio of Dance. The program is based on the TV shows “Dancing with the Stars” and “So You Think You Can Dance” and will feature seven couples, eight soloists, and a performance by the Aerial Silks group.

Jeff Budd, outgoing executive director of the Greater Sitka Arts Council, provides details on an upcoming event called Sitkans Can Dance. A mashup of popular TV shows like “Dancing With The Stars” and “You Think You Can Dance?,” local residents will be the stars of this dancing extravaganza. Registration is now open for couples ready to do a mandatory waltz and a ballroom dance of their choice, such as the foxtrot or the mambo, during a show scheduled for Nov. 22 at the Performing Arts Center.
