UAS to receive $2.3M in federal funds to expand mariculture program

On September 2, the White House announced $49 million dollars in funding for further development of Alaska’s mariculture industry– that’s mostly shellfish and seaweed. The “Alaska Mariculture Cluster,” led by Southeast Conference, was one of 21 winners in the nationwide “Build Back Better Regional Challenge” program. $2.3M is going to the University of Alaska Southeast. When the governor told Alaskans he was signing the budget Monday, he spoke about restoring funding for multiple programs. But perhaps another “r” word is more accurate. He actually reversed his previous decision to veto the University of Alaska system’s funding by 40 percent. In the end, the university system will have its budget slashed by $25 million. Read More
