Today (08-16-16) is the one-year-anniversary of the August 18th landslide in Sitka. In the week that followed, many in Sitka volunteered food, shelter, and sweat to the recovery effort. And amid these gestures of aid, one of the most healing agents was words.
Cellist Evan Drachman and SSMF board member Rob Allen discuss this Saturday's Memorial Concert for William Stortz, who died in the Kramer Avenue landslide last August 18. On Saturday (4-09-16), city staff, friends, and family of William Stortz installed a brass memorial plaque at Sitka Public Library in his memory. The plaque rests on a stone with a story behind it.
In spite of everything, 2015 will be remembered as a good year in Sitka. It’s the year that the community’s faith, grit, and forward-thinking principles were put to the test. It's the year we met our better selves.
