Trolling injunction appeal not likely to affect July 1 opening

The commercial salmon troll season is likely to open on schedule in Southeast Alaska on July 1, although an injunction petition that would shut it down remains alive in federal court. The Wild Fish Conservancy on June 15 filed an appeal of US Magistrate Judge Michelle Peterson's recommendation to deny the injunction; The US Justice Department, NOAA Fisheries, and Alaska Trollers filed a response on June 29 -- just two days before the scheduled opening of the fishery.

Assembly approves school fund sharing, denies public records appeal

The Sitka School District will have counselors at each school next year, thanks to a windfall of federal money. When the Sitka Assembly met on Tuesday (6-23-20) it voted to split over $450,000 in unexpected Secure Rural Schools funding between the city and the district. 

Attorney, administrator receive ‘satisfactory’ reviews

The Sitka Assembly is happy with the performance of the city administrator and city attorney over the past year. Both top city staffers received satisfactory reviews from the assembly in a special meeting Thursday night

Twitchell, Hames appointed to vacant school board seats

Following a series of very brief interviews on Wednesday evening (6-24-20), the board appointed Blossom Twitchell and Andrew Hames to fill vacancies created by a pair of recent resignations. The board's first order of business: Postponing the start of school by a week, to August 27.

‘Share Your Spark’ this 4th of July weekend

Sitka is getting creative this year with its Fourth of July celebration in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Part of their idea is called "Share Your Spark." Sitka behavioral health and social services providers have joined forces to create "Sitka Cares." On the Morning Interview, KCAW's Erin Fulton interviews Amy Zanuzoski from Sitka Counseling and Brenda Thayer, a telehealth counselor, about the initiative and how we can all access mental health support during a global pandemic.
