The Dauenhauers teach tour guides how to teach tourists

Two of greatest living scholars on Sitka’s Russian and Tlingit past were in town last week to train National Park rangers on the historic battles that took place here. Park rangers give programs, of course, but sometimes they’ll interact with visitors for only a few minutes at a time. So the challenge is: How do you teach visitors about the culture in a way that will have impact - when the most commonly-asked question is “Where’s the bathroom?”

Seasonal store unpacks for cruise opener

The first cruise ship of the season arrives in Sitka tomorrow/today (Wed May 7) and that means many local business are scrambling to get ready. The seasonal stores -- those that build their inventory from scratch every May -- are especially feeling the pressure. On Tuesday afternoon in the Sitka Fur Gallery, the metallic mannequins are still naked with less than 24 hours to go before the first wave of visitors arrives. After over 25 years working for the Sitka Police Department Lieutenant Barry Allen is retiring. He has some anxiety about leaving the community that he loves, but is looking forward to the next stage. Yesterday(4-28-14) was Allen's last day at the Sitka PD.

Sitka Tribal Council welcomes new GM

The Sitka Tribe of Alaska welcomed a new general manager last week. Lawrence Spottedbird replaced Ted Wright after a lengthy search. Council members and the public formally welcomed Spottedbird at the Tribe’s monthly meeting last Wednesday (4-16-14).
