The fishing area covered much of Starrigavan and Katlian bays, north of Sitka. The opening lasted two hours and thirty-five minutes, closing at 4:20 p.m. If sold at last year’s price, today’s catch would be worth about $2.4-million to fishermen at the docks.

UAS Sitka campus administrators spoke about some of the new degree programs in law enforcement, fisheries, and healthcare before the Sitka Chamber of Commerce this week (3-12-13). With an $8-million budget, including grant funding, the University intends to better equip Sitkans to enter the workforce.

Abigail Fitzgibbon was the Sitka champion last year as a sixth-grader, but was unseated earlier this year in a dazzling spell-off with eighth-grader Kyle Vidad. Fitzgibbon represented Sitka last weekend in Anchorage as a runner up, but nevertheless managed to run away with the state trophy.

A historic and ornate ceremony ensued in Sitka, attracting Orthodox Bishops from New York to Quebec. On the steps of St. Michael’s Cathedral, Native elders welcomed Metropolitan Tikhon, the head of the Orthodox Church in America with the traditional bread and salt.
