A caller to the Sitka police department Saturday evening reported a bear encounter on Harbor Mountain Road. A woman phoned in just before 5 PM on April 4 that she and a couple of other hikers had been chased by a bear on the road.

Another hiker — John Fulton — told KCAW that he saw the bear earlier in the day along the road near the picnic area. He met a hiker who had crossed from Gavan Hill along the ridge trail, and reported seeing the bear along the entire hike. Fulton was able to snap a picture of the animal before he and his dog, and the other hiker, returned to the parking area. The bear appears to be a fairly large adult.
