Matt Herskowitz, a Montreal-based pianist, composer and arranger, will be performing with his jazz trio at the Sitka Summer Music Festival this year. A graduate of the Julliard School in New York City and the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, Herskowtiz is known for fusing the technique of a classical virtuoso with a prowess in jazz.

Herskowitz talks about his first exposure to piano and the surprising direction of his career. The interview features his performance of “Bach à la Jazz,” a twist on the Bach Prelude in C Minor originally devised for the animated film the Triplets of Belleville. It is featured in his latest solo album, “Matt Herskowitz Upstairs.”

The Matt Herskowtiz Trio is offering a free lunchtime concert at 12:30 p.m. today (06-11-15) at the Odess Theater in Allen Hall.

The trio will perform interpretations of Chopin’s Etudes on Friday (06-12-13) at 7:30 p.m. in Harrigan Centennial Hall. There will be a 30 minute pre-concert lecture (optional) at 6:45 p.m. The second half of the concert will feature pianist Natasha Paremski.
