Seward Sisters “Nuka” and “Nikiski” were orphaned over  three weeks ago when their mother was killed raiding a chicken coop. According to Fortress co-director Evy Kinnear, the residents of Seward agreed to tolerate having the cubs roam free while the Fortress obtained the necessary permits to expand its brown bear habitat.

Sitka’s Fortress of the Bear on Saturday (8-25-18) received a pair of 8-month old orphan coastal brown bears from Seward, Alaska. Co-director Evy Kinnear describes how the cubs came to Sitka, and how they will be integrated into Fortress programs.
