No injuries were reported after one vehicle t-boned another in Sitka yesterday (8-10-26) afternoon.
Police say around 1 p.m. they received 911 reports of a car accident near the intersection of Halibut Point Road and Brady Street.
In an email to KCAW, Sitka Police spokesperson Serena Wild said a Toyota 4-Runner was using the outbound turn lane on the state highway as a merging lane. A driver of a Jeep on Brady Street saw the Toyota’s turn signal flashing, and assumed they were turning right onto Brady. As the Jeep pulled out to turn left onto the highway, the Toyota merged into traffic and t-boned the side of the Jeep.
Wild said there were no signs of impairment from either driver. While both drivers were at fault for improper use of a turn lane and failure to yield to oncoming traffic, neither received citations. The Jeep was towed away from the scene.
Wild said the Sitka Police Department reminds the public to please use the designated turn lanes for their intended purpose: making turns. They are not extra lanes for merging, passing, or getting ahead of traffic.
