Power outage caused by regular equipment testing

All of Sitka experienced a brief power outage Thursday morning (5-6-16), that began at approximately 8:08 AM during testing of the back-up diesel generator. The outage lasted for 48 minutes, until the utility department corrected the fault and returned the generator to full service.

Letter prompts dismissal of Sitka’s municipal attorney

Sitka’s municipal attorney Robin Schmid was summarily dismissed Thursday afternoon (5-5-16), after the assembly received a letter from Schmid’s lawyer suggesting that she had been improperly asked to resign.

SeaTech students research whales

Although graduation is this week, school is not over for some science students at Mt. Edgecumbe High School in Sitka. The class, known as SeaTech, is headed to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego to present their original research on beluga and narwhal bioacoustics.

Harry Race burglar indicted

A Sitka man is facing three felony charges for breaking into Harry Race Pharmacy last November. A Sitka Grand Jury on Friday indicted Derek R. Baird, age 28, for burglary in the second degree, after he allegedly entered the pharmacy after it was closed.
