Residents past HPR’s 4000-block advised to boil water

The city will begin repairs on a 12" water main that is leaking on Halibut Point Road on Thursday, April 28th and shut off water at 10 a.m. until further notice.

Tonight (4-26-16), the Assembly will consider legalizing bed & breakfasts on boats, cracking down on texting while driving, and hear a report from the Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Sitka Tribe opens biotoxin lab to monitor PSP

At the end of the month, the Sitka Tribe of Alaska will open an environmental research laboratory to test shellfish for paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP). The lab hopes to give both subsistence diggers and commercial divers peace of mind.

Most cruises docking on Sitka’s shore this summer

The majority of cruise ships making stops in Sitka this summer will be docking out the road. Holland America Line has agreed to tie all its ships up at the Old Sitka Dock, meaning 45 ships will be bringing tourists directly to shore. This is a big change from years past, where Holland America ferried their passengers to town via tender boat.

City Attorney to resign after evaluations

At her annual evaluation on Tuesday (4-19-16), City Attorney Robin Schmid was asked by the Assembly to resign.

Assembly gives Gorman ‘exemplary’ review

During his annual evaluation, the Assembly praised the leadership of City Administrator Mark Gorman during a challenging year for Sitka, while offering advice on how to improve public outreach.

Junior scientists prep for Bioblitz

Bioblitz is a 24-hour survey to document every species of flora and fauna in a community. Kitty LaBounty of University of Alaska southeast, Jessica Gill of Sitka Tribe of Alaska's Resource Protection Department and Aaron Prussian of the U.S. Forest Service are taking fourth graders from Keet Goshi Heen elementary School to Starrigavan for a Junior BioBlitz on April 27.
