A Coast Guard helicopter rescued all five people from aboard a Petersburg-based vessel that was sinking in the vicinity of Whitney Island, off Cape Fanshaw, about 40 miles north of Petersburg Saturday morning (12-18-10). All five people aboard the 34-foot, wooden vessel Sandy M. had abandoned ship. All were wearing survival suits.

A former credit union manager in Sitka will serve two years in prison for embezzlement. Vicki Weidenhof was convicted earlier this year for skimming over $187,000 in operational money from the ALPS Federal Credit Union in Sitka. US District Court Judge John Sedwick handed down the sentence this morning (Fri 12-17-10) in Anchorage.

Herring fishermen in Sitka next spring will target their highest quota ever. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced today (Thu 12-16-10) the guideline harvest level for the 2011 Sitka Sound sac roe herring fishery is 19,490 tons. This GHL is based on a 20% harvest rate of the forecast biomass of over 97,000 tons of mature herring.

Wind power has arrived in Sitka. Mt. Edgecumbe High School and the US Coast Guard have collaborated on the installation of a wind turbine on the Sitka Channel alongside the cutter Maple. The project has been seven months in the making. It is the third turbine in Alaska installed under the national Wind for Schools program run by the US Department of Energy.

The Assembly voted during its regular meeting last night to spend $10,000 for Markley to represent city interests to state and federal legislators. Sitka schools were a force to be reckoned with at the state 3A wrestling tournament in Nikiski over the weekend. And not just Sitka -- Southeast wrestlers took state titles in eight of fourteen weight classes. Mt. Edgecumbe High School alone produced three champions – a new record for the school – and Sitka had its first champion in eight years.
