Another Alaska Airlines jet has suffered a mishap in Sitka. Flight 67 was taking off from Sitka Wednesday evening at about 6:45 when a tire blew out. Airline spokesperson Bobbie Egan says the incident occurred when the Boeing 737 was about one-third of the way down the runway. The 120 passengers were transported back to the terminal aboard three Sitka Tours buses. Egan says the cause of the blowout remains a mystery.

A plan to combine two city departments is on hold. The Sitka Assembly postponed a request to merge the Planning and Building departments, during last night’s regular meeting. The plan would put city building inspector Preston O’Connell in charge of the new “Community Development Department.” It’s a move that put the city’s planning director in the position of defending his job performance during a public meeting – a situation both he and the assembly admitted was awkward.

As they often have in the past, Sitka voters bucked statewide trends during Tuesday’s statewide primary. If Sitkans had their way, incumbent Senator Lisa Murkowski would be the Republican nominee for the US Senate, rather than Fairbanks attorney – and Tea Party candidate – Joe Miller. But it would have been close. Murkowski edged out Miller by only 28 votes on election day, 479 to 451. In Petersburg and Wrangell, a little nearer to Murkowski’s hometown of Ketchikan, the margins were significantly greater in Murkowski’s favor.

A top official in the Department of Agriculture was in Sitka today (Fri 8-20-10) for a meeting on the Forest Service’s “transition framework.” Undersecretary Harris Sherman, who reports directly to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsak, spent four hours in the Sitka Tribe’s community house asking questions and listening to various perspectives the Forest Service’s plans to shift to young-growth management and forest restoration.
