Bear sighting forces temporary park closure

Sitka National Historical Park's trails were closed for about an hour while park staff and the police responded. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game also tried to locate the bear.

Voter turnout high in Sitka

Today (10-04-16) is the municipal election and voter turnout in Sitka is high. As of 4 p.m., both Precinct 1 and Precinct 2 were reporting a ballot count over 600. This time last year, the ballot count was half that.

Sitkans consider pros and cons of a property tax raise

To raise or to not raise the cap? That is the question before Sitka voters today (10-04-16). Proposition 1 asks if Sitka should raise the local limit on property taxes from 6 mills to 8 mills. If the ballot question passes, $1 million of that money would go towards the Electric Fund to help pay off the Blue Lake Dam.

Hoonah hunter mauled, medevacked to Juneau

A helicopter from Air Station Sitka medevacked a Hoonah man to Juneau on Saturday afternoon (10-1-16), after he was mauled by a brown bear. It was the 5th brown bear attack since August in the area.
