The US Coast Guard rescued six people Thursday afternoon (12-29-16), after their skiff went aground and capsized in Cube Cove on Admiralty Island, about 65 miles northeast of Sitka.

A helicopter from Air Station Sitka medevaced one woman to Juneau. She had reportedly suffered head injuries. The other five were picked up by the Coast Guard’s medium response boat and returned to Juneau by water. Several good Samaritan vessels also rendered aid.

Air Station Sitka reports that the skiff was hard aground on a rocky reef, with the port quarter submerged, at the time the helicopter departed the scene. The boat later drifted off the reef on the tide. The Coast Guard has issued a marine safety bulletin warning mariners in the area to keep an eye out for the boat.
