The Sitka Assembly meets tonight (01-10-17) in first meeting of the New Year.

In April, the Assembly passed an ordinance banning the use of a cell phone while driving, but without specifying the penalties for breaking the law. Tonight, they will do so.

On second and final reading, the Assembly will consider fining a person $50 for being caught to a phone in hand at the wheel. The second time this happens, the charge is $100 and the third time, it’s $200. Charged beyond that, the offender must appear in court. The maximum penalty is $500. And prior offenses must take place within five years. The Assembly will also reappoint Jere Christiner to a three-year term on the Investment Committee.
