A 59-year-old Sitka man is dead after the car he was in went into Starrigavan Bay at the Old Sitka ferry terminal.

Sitka police say they received a call just after 6 p.m. Friday that a person was trapped in a vehicle in the water. Two other occupants had managed to escape, the caller said.

The Sitka Fire Department responded. Senior Engineer Craig Warren said volunteers extricated a man, later identified by police as Thomas A. Fuller. He was found unresponsive. Medics performed CPR.  Fuller was pronounced dead at the scene.

Medics transported two women identified by police as 34-year-old Triska See and 47-year-old Tracy Green to Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center.

The vehicle, a 2015 Kia Soul, was impounded.

Sitka police say alcohol is believed to have been a factor. Authorities have not said who they believe was driving. The case remains under investigation.
